Central Asia

What is the southern route to Central Asia?

The southern route to Central Asia usually runs via Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea onward to Central Asian destination countries.

In truck transport from Europe to Central Asia, the southern route usually describes a transport connection via Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and then across the Caspian Sea. Depending on the destination area, the route continues to Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan or other Central Asian countries.

The transport combines classic road freight transport with a ferry connection across the Caspian Sea. This creates different operational requirements than a purely land-based route. Relevant factors include transit documents, border processes, port handling, ferry availability, weather conditions and coordination with the consignee and customs parties.

The southern route is particularly important when transports should not be routed through Russia or when it is the more suitable solution due to destination region, type of goods, transit requirements, document status or political framework conditions. GLOBALSPED always reviews the route on a shipment-specific basis according to goods, destination, transit time, documents and operational feasibility.
