Is a FIATA BL the same as a CMR?

CMR and FIATA BL are different transport documents: CMR for road transport, FIATA BL mainly for multimodal transport chains.

No. A CMR is the international consignment note for road freight transport. It is used for cross-border truck transports and accompanies the goods during road transport.

A FIATA BL, on the other hand, is a multimodal transport document and can be used in transport chains involving several modes of transport. Depending on how it is issued and the trade transaction, it can have a different legal and commercial meaning than a CMR consignment note.

For international truck transports to Central Asia, the Caucasus, Turkey or Ukraine, the CMR is usually the central transport document in practice. A FIATA BL is only required if it is explicitly requested or if the transport or trade structure makes it necessary.
